International filmmaker take home the Oscar this season?

Could another international filmmaker take home the Oscar this season?

International filmmaker take home the Oscar . While more films directed by filmmakers from outside the U.S. are being nominated for Best Picture these days, the ones that ultimately win the Oscar tend to be helmed by directors from English-speaking countries, like last year’s “Oppenheimer.” In the past 50 years, only eight non-English-speaking filmmakers have won, with Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” standing out as the only Best Picture winner where the majority of the film is in a language other than English.

This awards season, three contenders from non-English-speaking countries are vying for a spot in that exclusive club, though two of their films are in English: “Conclave,” a papal drama from German director Edward Berger; “The Substance,” a Hollywood-style story from French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat; and “Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish-language film set in Mexico but shot in France by Jacques Audiard. So far, “The Substance” is leading at the box office with $56.4 million globally, which is impressive, though still far behind “Parasite.” “Conclave” has earned $37.9 million, while “Emilia Pérez” has earned $8.8 million through Netflix.

As is often the case, some of the directors on this list have made their Oscar-winning films in Hollywood, with their countries of origin noted for context.
